Things NOT to include on your CV:
● Your address - unless you want a home visit from HR. This is will only hurt your chances, even though it illegal not to hire someone of distance in Israel.
● ID number - unless you're applying for a government job and this is requested
● DOB - a hiring manager can quickly figure out your age, no reason to hand over this information
● Marital status/ number of kids - this information is irrelevant to the job you're applying for. When I was screening through hundreds of CVs, I came across a CV that said: engaged (he even added a RING icon) - no joke.
● Picture - the recruiter will see what you look like on LinkedIn. You're not applying for a modeling career, so don't put your picture on your CV 😁
● Nobody cares how many countries you've traveled to (unless you're applying for a travel blogger position 😁). I received a CV once with all the countries he has visited - it was not relevant.
More Tips
● Make your resume in WORD only and then convert it to PDF. I had my CV made in PPT, and I only realized after a few months that my CV wasn't being read correctly in AI systems because of how it was saved from ppt to PDF. The same goes for Canva - do not make your resume on it.
Context:
I paid someone to design my CV. They did so in PowerPoint. After about a month, I wasn't getting interviews. I decided to hire someone else to redesign and rewrite my CV.
Cara explained that having my CV in PPT to PDF wasn't helpful because the HR tech wasn't reading it correctly. In addition, my old CV had icons - this was unnecessary and could not be read by the HR system, so it left me having to reinput all my CV details.
After Cara took the time to understand the type of jobs I was applying for and did a simple design - I got significantly more interviews.
● Make your resume clean and easy to read. Recruiters look at your CV for maybe 5 seconds.
● Add some color to your CV for the headlines. BOLD, WARM COLORS. Green, blue, and purple are some excellent examples.
● Update your Linkedin URL. On your CV, type Linkedin and HYPERLINK to your profile! Did you know that you can edit your LinkedIn URL to be just your name without all those messy numbers? A custom public profile URL will help other members and recruiters easily identify your profile and connect with you. Use some combination of your first and last name without dashes when possible. If your preferred URL is already taken, you may need to adjust accordingly. Once you click save, your URL is ready to go!
On the desktop, double-click on ME and then [Edit public profile & URL]
On Mobile app:
1) Click on the wheel in the upper right-hand corner
2) Account preferences - Name, Location, and industry
3) Scroll down to Edit contact info, click on the arrow box where it says Profile URL
4) Click on Edit your custom URL
5) Voilà - you now have a new beautiful URL!
● ONE page - Israel A4 is different than the US; pay attention to this in WORD.
● Your header:
1)Name
2) E-mail (please, please do not use your Hotmail.com
address 😂)
3) Phone number (if your WhatsApp number is different, add it!). Sometimes you will be contacted by Whatsapp first (this is professionally acceptable in Israel ☺️)
4) Linkedin - hyperlink URL
5) Short bio
● Make sure your CV is saved as your name + last name CV, for example, Gila Bublick CV and NOT Gila Bublick CV version 3
● If you're applying for a few different jobs - tweak your resume accordingly. The recruiter needs to understand why you're applying for this specific position.
● If this is your first job and your education is relevant to the role, put it after your intro. If you have work experience, put your education AFTER your work experience. A recruiter skims your CV for about 5 seconds - you need to grab their eye.
● Nobody cares that you graduated high school 10+ years ago - do not put this on your resume.
● Hire someone to write your CV! Not just anyone - someone who understands your field. Show them a few job descriptions you've applied for and use the companies' buzzwords.
● Check spelling and grammar! Grammarly does wonders - it is worth it to pay for it. Once you pay for it - you can use it on mobile, too - add the keyboard.
