The first F2F interview

Updated: May 4, 2023

Congrats, you've got to second phase!

  • Arrive no more than 10 minutes early. You don't want to be awkwardly sitting there waiting. The person interviewing is busy with other meetings, and it can be somewhat of an annoyance that you arrive way before the time you were supposed to.

  • Make sure you did not confuse a F2F interview with a Zoom interview. Review the invitation details carefully.

  • Look presentable. In tech and in Israel in general, it's more chill, obviously not beach wear but also not wedding wear.

  • Be nice to anyone you meet while at the interview. First impressions matter.

How I prepare for my first F2F interview - I try to find things I can bring up casually without looking like a stalker.

  • I looked up the person interviewing me on social media. Linkedin, FB, Insta, Twitter, and I google them.

  • Research the company, its mission statement, company culture, fundraising rounds, investors, awards they've won, events, etc.

  • ChatGPT - No, I am not joking.

  1. Tell me what you know about the CEO at XXX?

  2. What can you tell me personally and professionally about XXX (the person interviewing you may or may not be recognized by ChatGPT)

  3. Why is the XXXX (company name) called XXX?

  4. Explain to me as if I were a 5-year-old what XXX (company) does

  5. Who are XXXX (company name) competition?

  6. Why is XXX better than its competition?

  7. Tell me what you know about XXX (person interviewing name), what is their professional background, and what do you know about their personal life?

  • Research the management and know their name; you don't need to memorize them, but at least know who the co-founders and CEO are. For context: I had an interview with HR, and as we sat down for the interview, they mentioned we had just passed the CEO. I politely said, yes, I know. He asked how, and I said because I researched before the interview. He was impressed with my efforts.

  • Read the job description beforehand and remember to use the buzzwords.

  • Be yourself - don't try to be someone you're not.

Some questions that may be asked - google for more possible questions

  1. Tell me about yourself

  2. Why did you leave your previous job?

  3. What was something that was challenging for you in your roles as XXX?

  4. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

  5. Why have you switched jobs so many times? NEVER badmouth your previous company!!

  6. Give an example of how you have handled a challenge in the workplace before.

  7. Give an example of when you performed well under pressure.

  • At the end of the interview, they will ask if YOU have any questions for Them (google for more questions you can ask)

  1. Can you please tell me about the team I will be working? Context: This will show that you're a team player.

  2. What did you like about working at this company?

  3. Is this a new role, or will I be taking over for an emplowho'sho’s leaving?

  4. What are the next steps in the interview process? Context: This will be very helpful for you to know this

Always end the interview by thanking them for their time and sending a follow-up

e-mail within 24 hours thanking them for meeting and saying that you look forward to hearing back from them soon/I enjoyed learning more about the company and position etc.
